My first official dive trip since my cervical spine surgery on Sept 19, 2017. I joined a trip on the Rocio del Mar to head to the Revillagigedo Islands aka Socorro. My flew into Mexico and stayed at the Posada Real in San Jose del Cabo while I eagerly awaited heading to the boat. There ended up being some issues with the boat, the shaft broke and they were scrambling to get it done in time. The trip ended up heading out to sea 2 days late, but the owner of the Rocio del Mar was incredible. She paid for the extra nights at the hotel, food for the days we were there, a booze cruise, and 2 dives with Manta Divers. At the end of the trip, she also comped everyone on the boat for the nitrox use, hyperbaric fees, and the marine park fees. The crew and the boat was incredible, so I will definitely be traveling with them again one day.
We went to 2 of the locations in the Revillagigedo Islands, San Benedicto and Roca Partida. We skipped on Socorro because of our delay and the requirement to check in with the military there, if we dive at that location.
San Benedicto is where we saw the giant Oceanic Mantas. They were so graceful and lovely. I also found Giant Electric Rays and a stingray that I am unsure of the species. There were a huge variety of sharks there, whitetip reef sharks, blacktip reef sharks, silvertip reef sharks, scalloped hammerheads, tiger sharks, galapagos sharks, and silky sharks. I was in love with the pelagic life there. We were even lucky enough to see a pregnant whale shark and one other whale shark in the distance.
Roca Partida was a interesting location. It is literally a rock that sticks up in the middle of nowhere. I was told that it may have been the center of a volcano that had blown. The current in that location came with massive upwellings, downwellings, and I even ended up in the dead center of a swirl like vortex. We found all those sharks that were at San Benedicto at Roca Partida also… Along with giant schools of the scalloped hammerheads. There was a school that had somewhere in the vicinity of 60-80 sharks and another that had around 30.
Overall, it was an amazing trip and I am desperate to return again one day.
